2) Brave Combo - Kick Ass Polkas
Midlake - Bamnan and Silvercork
Oso Closo - Rest
Record Hop - Pareidolia

Just in this week:

Good to see Record Hop is still up there at the top. I also recommend the Stumptone album.
You can pick up most local CDs at Recycled Books (on the square) or Strawberry Fields (at Oak & Bonnie Brae).

the weekend marathon, day 2

5:25 PM Sat, Apr 19, 2008 |
Cody Robinson   E-mail   News tips

Last night we hit Rubber Gloves. The big hit of the night was the opening of Record Hop's set, where a video (provided by Martin Iles) projected behind the band showed a drum set in a field being shot to pieces by a machine gun, which bled into the first song for Record Hop & set the tone for the rest of the set. It's been a while since I've seen a crowd that large and that excited facing down a hometown rock band. A night like that does my heart good.

Tonight I'll most likely split my time between the show I'm playing and Dan's Silverleaf, hopefully scoring a little BBQ while I'm over there.

Check the post below for everything going on tonight.

So much going on some bands are playing twice, even in the same night..
in one case they're re-arranging and playing a second set in the same place.
No way am I gonna even try to provide links to all of this stuff, this should be the

the pAper chAse at Rubber Gloves tonight

paperchase.jpg
I borrowed this one from their myspace, if anyone knows who gets credit I will gladly give it

I'll admit that when I first moved to Denton ten years ago my decision was largely based on second-hand knowledge of the music scene here, most of what I had known at the time was the Dallas/Fort Worth scene, mostly the One-Ton Records acts such as Caulk & Doosu. Not to take anything away from those bands, but after being here for a couple of years a roommate took me to a Paperchase show - and it completely changed the way I looked at music. The sugary rock riffs of the Dallas scene at the time were fine, but I was raised in an area where the radio was all you have - I had never heard music as manic and deconstructed as Young Bodies Heal Quickly, You Know".

Over the years of seeing them live I've noticed moments of similarities with other bands, but musically there's just not much out there that would be on the same plane. I once told a friend they sometimes remind me of a live act of "The Wall" (the pulpit scene), only much angrier, precise, and demented.
I don't mean like dirty dread locks and crappy makeup demented, I mean the little clean cut guy in the cube next to you storing body parts in his mini-fridge for good luck. Like he suddenly jumped on top of his desk, waving his hands wildly, spewing half-sense and whole truths like they were daggers, making sure to aim them at every last person in the room.
There's a certain urgency in the music, like a frantic pen to paper missive, written in blood and partially running off the paper and written across the desk.
And unlike most bands I've seen in the past few years, every sentiment expressed in the lyrics are evident in his gestures and his face, from sarcastic to saccharine, from defeated to destroyer of worlds.

I could go a little deeper, but we'll just leave it at this:

Tonight (Friday April 11th)
Rubber Gloves (411 E. Sycamore, 9pm, $10_
the pAper chAse (also: fansite here w/music)
Faux Fox
Mount Righteous

Recycled books local top 3 sales for this week:

8:10 PM Sat, Apr 05, 2008 |
Cody Robinson   E-mail   News tips

recordhop.jpg

1. Record Hop -- Record Hop

2. Warren Jackson Hearne -- Black Heart EP
Mom -- Little Brite

3. nellAnoRe -- DVD & Soundtrack
The Paperchase -- Young Bodies Heal Quickly

On a side note, the The Paperchase's website keeps defaulting to the Gutterth website for some reason. For those who don't know, Gutterth is a Denton-based promotion/record label group that's done a lot for local music, and they seem to be Paperchase's #1 fans.. so it makes sense, just wonder where the original website went...

Free show at 7pm tonight, just off the square..

4:38 PM Sat, Apr 05, 2008 |
Cody Robinson   E-mail   News tips

In the courtyard of the St. Paul Lutheran Church & University Center. Not a venue I'm familiar with, but it's free, I'm told there will be burgers and beer (which also seems odd at a church, but like I said - I know nothing about the place) and the lineup is solid.

7pm: AM Ramblers
8pm: Doug Burr
