I took some photos from the Joe Lally show last night at Rubber Gloves. If for some reason you can't see the slideshow above here's the direct link: The entry "Photos from Joe Lally, Tre Orsi at Rubber Gloves 2-27-08" has no entry tags. February 27, 2008Rubber Gloves (411 E. Sycamore 9pm, $8) If you don't love Fugazi I'm not so sure you and I can hang out.
Here's the official Dischord promo hype: Joe Lally has played bass in Fugazi since the band's inception in 1987. In 2003 the members of Fugazi decided to take an indefinite hiatus from recording and performing. Since then Joe has continued to write and perform new material both solo and in collaboration with various musicians and friends. Joe's first album, "There to Here", was released in October 2006 and featured guest performances from Fugazi-mates Ian Mackaye, Guy Picciotto and Jerry Busher as well as many others. In the last year he has toured extensively, playing everything from Jazz festivals to rock clubs, in the US, Europe, and Brazil, often accompanied live by members of The Melvins, Capillary Action, Zu and others. “Nothing Is Underrated”, like Joe's first album, was produced by Ian MacKaye at Dischord House and was mixed at Inner Ear Studios. Joe has again collaborated and recorded with many fellow musicians, including: Ben Azzara - drums (The Capitol City Dusters, DCIC), Andy Gale - drums (Haram), Eddie Janny - guitar (Rites of Spring), Sam Krulewitch - kayboards (Capillary Action), Ricardo Lagomasino - drums (Capillary Action), Ian MacKaye - guitar (Fugazi), and Guy Picciotto - guitar (Fugazi) and Devin Ocampo - drums (Medications). Joe will be touring extensively, both nationally and internationally, in 2007 and 2008, including dates in the USA, Japan, Europe and more. I can't say much about Edie Sedgewick aside from I pretty much hate what I've heard so far. Might be one of those bands that's more interesting live.. or maybe the band you miss so you can go stand in line at the bar. We'll see... February 16, 2008Didn't have much time to make a show list this weekend, so I'll defer to my friends at We Shot JR and Fine Line Live, who both have extensive lists for this weekend: We all have our particular tastes and areas of interest, but we all have the same goal here, which is to get you out of the house & in front of a great band.

After several years in the making, Shiny Around The Edges released We Lost The Signal In The Hills as a free download from their website today. Here's the "official blurb", as the band calls it: We are pleased to present our new release, "We Lost the Signal in the Hills," as a free download for you on this Valentine's Day. We worked with many people over the last few years on this project and really enjoyed the process; we hope you enjoy the outcome. We will now be heading back into the studio with our friend Matthew J. Barnhart in order to capture the heavier, live experience of us as a quintet. We promise it won't be another two years before that sees the light of day.

February 8, 2008Here's the decent sized list of Denton bands (and semi-Denton bands) that scored a showcase spot at South by Southwest in March: And just a few of the acts with Denton roots: The whole, exhausting, subject-to-change list itself is here: 2008.sxsw.com/music/festival/alphalist. It'll make your eyeballs swim, trust me. February 6, 2008Will Johnson
If you like Jesse Sykes' sultry country-folk and listen to a lot of torch singers, you should come out Friday. If you don't ordinarily swing that way, watch the preview for this documentary produced by the Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer David Leeson of The Dallas Morning News. (Click "Trailer 2"in the Trailers section.) That's Sarah's song "Swelling" you hear over the footage. Then come out Friday. The entry "Must-see Friday at Dan's" has no entry tags. February 2, 2008
The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a traveling show of sorts that tours the country in hopes of educating young musicians in the ways of the music industry. It's rare that something legitimately designed to benefit and educate young musicians comes along. Staff report
Are you a high school student and play in a garage band, enjoy listening to music, or know someone who does? Keep reading. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is coming to Denton soon, just in time for the North Texas Battle of the Bands. Six finalists in the North Texas competition, sponsored by the Denton Record-Chronicle, the University of North Texas, Lone Star Attitude Inc., and the Texas Music Project, will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Murchison Performing Arts Center at UNT. The winning band will receive day-long recording session of their winning song and filming of a music video aboard the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, among other things. They also will receive a free entry into the John Lennon Song-writing Contest with the opportunity to win a $20,000 grand prize. Who can enter? Bands with 75 percent of their members going to high school full-time with all members under age 20 are invited to submit their best recordings online to www.dentonrc.com beginning Tuesday. Bands should have at least three members but no more than eight. Look for “Battle of the Bands” or the logo and click to submit an entry for the competition. Contest rules, entry forms, and other details also will be available. The deadline to submit MP3 or audio recordings is Feb. 19. For the music lovers in the crowd, as well as friends and family members of participating bands, you will have the opportunity to vote for favorites among the bands submitting audio uplinks to the North Texas Battle of the Bands. Shortly after the Feb. 19 deadline for uploading band audio tapes, the Record-Chronicle and www.dentonrc.com will unveil the list of competing bands from which to select favorites. A band selected by popular vote will be revealed as the people’s choice award winner and perform on Feb. 29 at the North Texas Battle of the Bands event at the Murchison Performing Arts Center. In addition, five other finalists among those submitting their audio uplinks through the Record-Chronicle Web site will be selected by judges. The six bands will perform live onstage at the performing arts center. A panel of judges, including Paul “Pappy” Middleton, engineer for folk and blues singer Bonnie Raitt and owner of Palmyra Studios in Palmer, will review the live performances at the Feb. 29 competition. Tickets to the band competition will soon be available at $10 per person at www.music.unt.edu/mpac. A portion of the proceeds will go to support area music programs for students. Seating for the competition is limited. The John Lennon Education Tour Bus is a non-profit professional recording studio and video-editing suite with the latest technology and musical instruments that travels throughout the states and Canada 10 months each year, offering tours to students and others interested in learning more about the industry. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus will also be at several locations in Denton, including the University of North Texas campus, beginning Feb. 26, to allow tours. The Texas Music Project is a non-profit organization that works with the state’s music industry, Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Texas Coalition for Quality Arts Education to help strengthen and restore music education to Texas schools. As an aside, while discussing this event with some of my peers it occurred to me that the "High School Bands" I once knew are probably well into college by know. So if you ever wonder why you never see anything about your band on this blog it isn't because I'm some sort of elitist snob... it's because I didn't know you were out there.
