January 28, 2008I believe these were shot by Andy Laviolette (formerly of jam band Bagg) at Dan's Silverleaf. Just thought I'd share. RTB2, "When Hammer Hits Stone": The Slow Burners, "Yeah, It's Gone": The entry "Recent live videos" has no entry tags. January 25, 2008Might as well make a night of it.

On the other end of the music world Dan's Silverleaf will have Hotel Brotherhood, Dust Congress, and C.S. Flemmons (of The Baptist Generals). This one is more of a laid back, acoustic-guitar-heavy intimate show, and I highly suggest getting there early (about 10pm) to make sure you catch Dust Congress. It'll be a nice night to stay warm and do the film-watching thing, and this screening is free. Punk: The Early Years from All Movie Guide: The initial shock of punk rock was beginning to wane in Britain, but the movement was still picking up steam and establishing itself as a genuine musical force when this documentary was shot in 1977 and 1978. Originally created for U.K. television, Punk: The Early Years includes interviews with musicians, fans, record-label executives, and rock journalists as they discuss the meaning and impact of punk rock. The film also features performances from the Adverts, the Slits, Generation X (featuring Billy Idol), X-Ray Spex, and Eddie and the Hot Rods. Among those interviewed are Siouxsie Sioux (from Siouxie & the Banshees), Marc Bolan of T. Rex, and early Sex Pistols associate Jordan. For continued education, SF rents out The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder: Punk and New Wave. Big timers like Joan Jett sit in on a round table discussion; Elvis Costello and the Attractions and Patti Smith perform, among others. Check out Strawberry Fields' amazing online database for other rental ideas and good finds. The entry "late '70s Brit-punk doc at Strawberry Fields tonight" has no entry tags. January 19, 2008Forgot to mention the showcase for the new Denton label, Do For It Records.

Since there's not a lot going on until the weekend I thought I'd post a couple of videos from Denton's days gone by. Yeah, Baptist Generals are still around & going strong, but you can't deny the very different influences both of these bands have had on Denton's musicians in the past few years. The now defunct Lift To Experience's "These Are The Days". The Baptist Generals, "Raw From Self Destruction", live at the Denton Center For The Visual Arts, complete with a backstory on the origin of the song. The entry "Nothing going on tonight, so here's a few videos." has no entry tags. January 15, 2008The top 5 local sales for last week at Recycled Books:
1) Mom- Lite Brite Also, It's worth it to note that Mom's "Lite Brite" was #2 on the Good Records top 20 (overall sales for the week ending 1-13). Denton's own Bridges and Blinking Lights also came in at number 9 with their recent release "Standing On The Same Stick".
The entry "Top local record sales" has no entry tags. January 14, 2008Check out this hypnotic skewering of pop culture, made by Tree Wave's Paul Slocum: The video's first nonprofessional segment comes straight out of Denton -- with Samantha Moss from jetscreamer and Mike Seman from Shiny Around the Edges, and jetscreamer's Will Kapinos directing. Who knows where their video was shot -- looks to me like maybe the copy room in the bowels of the Death Star. January 10, 2008
Grassfight Nothing about Grassfight really makes sense. What band with Stephin Merritt-esque vocals and bass that broods of midnight would assume the name of a ritual pictured on the cover art for New Found Glory's Sticks and Stones? And what's with the ambiguous collared shirts? Don't you have to dress like Black Tie Dynasty to play post-punk in these parts? Apparently, this youngish Denton three-piece is confused about how things work when your band sounds even remotely like Interpol. And it's kind of refreshing.* "Secular Trends", track three on Schemes , is exhibit A. Hypnotic guitar lines are awash with shimmer, moody vocals sound low and make it serious. "Count Me Out" has brighter swing and a catchy chorus. The EP reminds listeners of the classic soundtrack to dark night that too many late-comers to Joy Division have tried rehashing, sure. But even though some of us have long tired of Cure followers, it's hard to dislike Grassfight's form of flattery. The songs on Schemes celebrate literate 80's music with a genuine study of it, not an outfit from it. Hear the EP in its entirety here.

...apparently there was a glitch somewhere that was blocking anyone from doing so. The entry "If you tried to post a comment in the past few weeks..." has no entry tags. January 4, 2008If I were getting out I'd check out Darcy over at Hailey's. Apparently they've been around for a while but I've never heard of 'em. That doesn't mean anything other than our paths have yet to cross, mind you. I'm not the all-knowing seer of Denton bands. I just happen to know more than the average bear. Rubber Gloves doesn't have a band playing tonight, so you know what that means.. As for me? I'll be in my garage, tinking on some project... pretending I'm some sort of mad scientist. If only I had a lab coat. The entry "Not a lot going on tonight" has no entry tags. |
